Guy Garvey, what a hero.

"But for those of us who turn the journey to work into a scene from a different film every day depending on the soundtrack, who cling to a good song on a bad day like a life raft, can conjure a memory instantly from the opening bars of an old favourite, who have the same feelings when hearing an album we don’t listen to any more that we do when thinking of an ex-lover… there has never been a better time for music."

365musicproject:

One of my favorite U2 songs covered by my favorite UK band.

Song of the day is “Running to Stand Still” by Elbow

So pretty and amazingly well done.

bigbigtruck:

Elbow, “Waving From Windows” (“Grace Under Pressure” B-side) (2002)

So wonderfully, beautifully restrained.

bigbigtruck:

Elbow, “The Loneliness of a Tower Crane Driver” (live with the BBC Orchestra)

I must have been working the ropes
when your hand slipped from mine
now I live off the mirrors and smoke
it’s a joke, a fix, a lie…
send up a prayer in my name

bigbigtruck:

Elbow, “Loss” (“Fallen Angel” B-side) (2002)

Maybe this is overly personal, but… of all the songs I’ve heard about depression, from musicians who’ve dealt with depression, this is the only one that really resonated with my own experience. (I don’t talk about it much publicly, but I’ve been managing MDD fairly well —for the most part— for the past 18 years.)

This track gets major points for foregoing plodding minor chords and pushing into itchy, shuffly, slight jazz with that can’t-shake-it, why-don’t-you-just-cheer-up, leave-me-alone-so-i-can-get-things-done vibe.
(Or maybe I’m just projecting, here.)

Loss took human form
He sits at every table and he doesn’t eat a thing
Stands at the piano and he never sings
He must be 6’ tall
I’d have recognised his footsteps anywhere at all
He used to throw me round the room
Roads lead to roads lead to
He won’t leave me alone
Loss took human form
Tried to introduce me to a friend
The end
